Helios. (Coin of Rhodes, in the British Museum.) there he had flocks of sheep and oxen, whichwere tended by his daughters Phaethusa andLampetie (Od. xii. 128). Later traditionsascribe to him flocks also in the island ofETythla; and it may be remarked in general, that sacred flocks, especially of oxen, occur inmost places where the worship of Helios wasestablished. By Perse he was the father of HELLE Aeetes, Circe and Pasiphae, and by Clymene ofPhaethon. Temples of Helios probably existedin Greece at a very early time, since the vow tobuild a temple to Helios is regarded as naturalin Od. xii. 346 ; and in later times we find hisworship established in various places, andespecially in the island of Rhodesâwhich, asspecially belonging to him, held annual games(r/Aieia or aAeia) in his honour (Pind. 01. ; Diod. v. 56)âand on the Acrocorinthus(Paus. ii. 1,6; 5, 1). The sacri-fices offered to him consisted ofwhite rams, boars, bulls, goats, lambs, especially white horses, and honey.â
