In the 1860s goldminers washed away major parts of the alluvial landscape near Cromwell in Central Otago. Today table mounts are towering above deep gorges in a dry desert landscape left by the goldrush. Some tourists are climbing the Bannockburn Track to the remains of goldmining times while thyme is sending heavy smells on sunny spring days.
