Heart Illustration, 1523

Heart. 16th century engraving showing four views of a dissected heart. The image at lower right shows the exterior of the heart and the surrounding blood vessels. The other three diagrams show various sections of the heart cut away to reveal the organ's internal structure. Before it was discovered by Harvey in the 17th century that the heart pumped blood around the body, it was widely believed that the heart contained a person's mental faculties. Images drawn by the Italian anatomist Jacopo Berengario da Capri (1460-1530) in 1523. Capri was professor at Bologna University.
