(Young's New 'Weeping Birch.) B. a. var. pubescens. Downy-leaved Birch. A native of Germany, resem- bles the American White Btrch, but more vigorous, and branches sUghtly pendulous. var. tristis. Bliojpiittra. Indian Paper Birch. A fine, distinct species, of upright growth, with large heart-shaped foliage. In its wild state, on the Himalayan Moun- tains, it forms a noble tree fifty to sixty feet high. $ B. leiita. American Cherry or Mahogany Birch. A native species, of rapid growth, with smooth, gray bark, and large leaves, which, when bruised, diffuse a sweet odor. Adapted for park or garden. B. nana. Dwarf Birch. A bushy shrub, native of both Europe and America, seldom growing higher than five feet; leaves numerous, round, sharply crenated. Young wood downy. A charming miniature tree. $ CAKPINUS. Hornbeam. Hainbuche, Ger. Charme, Fr. {JSfat. Ord. Corylaceixi.) C. Americana. American Hornbeam. A native species, growing from fifteen to twenty feet high. In its mode of growth, quite similar to the Beech, but the foliage is thinner and more irregular in form. Makes a very ornamental and useful hedge.
