Holland submarine patent, 9 September 1902. This is sheet 2 of 2 of the application filed with the US Patent Office on 7 August 1901 by Irish engineer John P. Holland (1841-1914) detailing his design for a submarine boat. Holland designed a number of submarines in the USA from the 1870s onwards, including the Holland I (1878). His Holland VI (1897) became the first US Navy submarine (USS Holland) in 1900, purchased for 150,000 US dollars. This is the design shown here. Holland also designed the first Royal Navy submarine (HMS Holland 1, 1901). The USS Holland was just over 16 metres long and armed with a torpedo tube and a dynamite gun.
