WASHINGTON DC, United States — The World War II Memorial illuminated at dusk on the National Mall in Washington DC. The memorial, with its distinctive fountain and arches, honors the 16 million who served in the armed forces during World War II, including more than 400,000 who gave their lives.

Photograph by David Coleman. The World War II Memorial in Washington DC, dedicated on May 29, 2004, is a tribute to the service and sacrifice of Americans during the Second World War. Located on the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, it spans acres. The memorial's design, by Friedrich St. Florian, features 56 pillars representing states and territories, arranged in a semicircle around a plaza and fountain. Two 43-foot arches, marked "Atlantic" and "Pacific," symbolize the two theaters of war. The Freedom Wall, adorned with 4,048 gold stars, each representing 100 Americans who died in the war, is a poignant reminder of the conflict's human cost. At dusk, the memorial's lighting creates a solemn and reflective atmosphere, with the illuminated fountain and structures contrasting against the darkening sky. This lighting not only enhances the memorial's visual impact but also allows for extended visitation hours, making it a popular evening destination for tourists and locals alike.
