This scene makes reference to a famous tale about an eight-headed serpent that has devoured seven of the eight daughters of an old couple. Susanoo slays the monster and marries the eighth daughter. Since this is the fifth in a series of prints with imagery associated with the twelve animals of the zodiac, Kuniyoshi substitutes a dragon for the eight-headed serpent to indicate the sign of the Dragon.
