Phantom midge larva. Polarised light micrograph of a phantom midge larva (Chaoborus sp.). Also known as the ghost midge or glassworm, the larval form of this midge is transparent and contains air sacs at the front and rear of its body (head is at upper right). These air sacs are used to change depth. It preys on the larvae of mosquitoes, and reaches a length of around 2 centimetres.
