Lincoln asked that his name remainon the sign until he returned from Washington, and Herndon agreed. The name was*never erased. Judge Herndon was a native of Kentucky, born in 1818, nine years laterthan Lincoln, and died at Springfield in 1891. (82). JEFFERSON DAVIS, United States Senator from Mj^issippi, resigned when hisState seceded from the Union, and on February 4th, 1861, a month before the in-auguration of President Lincoln, was elected President o£ the Confederate States ofAmerica. In 1862 he was re-elected for six years, but did not serve his full term, as hewas captured a month after Lees surrender, and imprisoned at Fortress Monroe. His casenever came to trial, he was released, and died in 1889. Kentucky was his native State(as it was also Lincolns), 1808 being the year of his birth. He was one year older thanPresident Lincoln.
