Elephantiasis. View of the scrotum of a 40 year old man enlarged by elephantiasis (lymphatic filariasis). A soft painless swelling of the scrotum caused by fluid accumulation is known as a hydrocele. Elephantiasis is a type of filariasis, a disease caused by parasitic worms spread by blood-sucking insects. The worms block the lymphatic system causing fluid accumulation (oedema) and associated swelling of the lymph vessels. Repeated infections result in massive enlargement of the affected part of the body. Other commonly affected areas are the limbs. The disease is treated with drugs. Photographed in Papua New Guinea.
