Her father, Levi Gunderson, was oneoi the piniieers of Columbia county, anddied at the age of sixty-eight. His widow,Mrs. Trena Gunderson. li\-ed until Hanson and wife were the parents oftwo sons and three daughters: Hans Levi, partners in business in Rio; An-nie ; Trena, who is Mrs. Charles Isaacson,living at Rio; Christina, Mrs. Ed Isaacson, isa: Hazel Run, Minnesota. At the age of twenty-three he leftthe farm, and entered a general store at Rio, he uas engaged as a clerk for someyears. In 1892 he went to Hazel Run, Min-nesota, and engaged in business for himselfas a dealer in lumber and agricultural, im-plements. He was not very well satisfiedwith the surroundings, and sold out in abouta year and came back to Rio, where he be-came manager of the extensive estate of Thompson, deceased. In 1894 he builta large, double, brick, two-story building. Inthis he opened a large department store withThomas Sampson as his partner. He ter-minated the partnership two years later bybuying out all Mr. Sampsons interest, andthe business was carried on for a time underthe firm name of A
