The volunteer Games Makers who have given up their time to work at the Olympics for free have been hailed as the saviours of the London Games. Up to 70,000 volunteers have been recruited to help running the Games - completing tasks such as welcoming visitors, manning venues and helping behind the scenes. London 2012 Games Maker is the official name for a London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics volunteer. London 2012 is calling its volunteers Games Makers because they will make the Games happen. Games Makers will take on various roles, from directing spectators and scanning tickets, to providing physiotherapy to athletes and mending costumes backstage at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Previous volunteer crews have been called Team 2010 (Vancouver 2010) , Team 2006 (Melbourne), Crew 2002 (Manchester) and The Dream Team (Doha). The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) plans to recruit up to 70,000 Games Makers who can look forward to a once-in-a-lifetime experience while developing the necessary skills through three days of training, and volunteering for a minimum of 10 days at the Olympic or Paralympic Games. Worldwide Olympic Partner McDonald’s has been appointed as the Presenting Partner for the London 2012 Games Maker Programme. McDonald’s will use its expertise in customer service and training and nationwide presence to help attract, select and train the diverse team that will be needed to make the 2012 Games a success. Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG, announced that Games Makers should be prepared to push beyond their personal best to deliver an exceptional level of service – making the difference between a good Games and a truly great Games. As he unveiled the London 2012 Games Maker name he said: ‘London 2012 needs brilliant volunteers to help us deliver a great Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our volunteers will be called Games Makers to reflect the important role they will play in staging the 2012 Games.
