Wednesday 30 January 1929 - The then Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor) visiting the poverty stricken (due to unemployment) Durham & Northumberland coal fields towns of Winlaton, Blaydon, High Spen, Chopwell,Consett, Gateshead and Chester le Street. He is seen in this old photograph emerging from a mine carrying a miners lamp. He visited miners houses and even entered the house of Mr. Frank McKay, a 74 year old miner whose wife had just died and visited the room upstairs where Mrs. McKay lay dead.‘Taffy’ Lewis an out of work miner acted as guide through Winlaton
