Nature reserve for breeding sea birds and grey seal. Used by St Aidan as a retreat. A 14th century chapel marks the site of St Cuthbert's hermitage. He lived here from 676 to 684 and died here 687. Longstone Lighthouse was the scene of Grace Darling's rescue of the survivors of the Forfarshire which foundered in a storm of 7 September 1838.
