Fumarole vents on the flanks of the Kilauea volcano, on the island of Hawaii, USA. Fumaroles are vents in volcanic areas that eject acidic gases and steam. They arise as subterranean water, which contains dissolved sulphur, that is heated by molten rock close to the surface. The sulphur is deposited as a yellow solid (upper centre) around the vents.
