Union troops went to destroy the bridge of the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad over the Catawba River in 1865.
On April 17, 1865, Union Major Moderwell was sent with 250 men of the 12th Ohio Cavalry to destroy the bridge of the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad over the Catawba River. The troops arrived at the bridge on April 19, which was 1,150 long and 50 feet above water. Moderwell's men set it on fire at one end and in 30 minutes it was destroyed. This engraving is based on Moderwell's description of the bridge.
