HARTLEY, Mordecai, governor of Ohio(1844-46), was bom in Fayette county, Pa., Dec. 16,1783. His father was a farmer, and until he hadreached the age of sixteen the boy helped farm thepaternal acres, obtaining hisschooling after the usual fashionof country boys at that time—at the nearest district schooland in the intervals of farmlabor. In 1809 he went to Jef-ferson ,near the mouthof Cross creek, where he settledas a farmer on his own the breaking out of the warof 1812 with Great Britain heraised a company of volunteers,and was with Gen. Harrison incommand of his company withthe rank of captain. After thewar was over he removed toRichland county and openedup a farm in the ?wilderness ofthat neighborhood. In themeantime he had saved money,and this he invested in a stockof merchandise and started astore in Mansfield.
