Vorticella (Vorticella sp.) on a plant, light micrograph. Vorticella (lower left) is a single-celled ciliate comprising a bell-shaped head with tiny hairs (cilia) attached to it. These cilia enable the vorticella to move and capture food. It is anchored to a thin rod of plant matter (yellow) by a long stalk attached to the head. Vorticella live in both marine and fresh water, and their diet consists largely of bacteria.
