Discarded rock showing the vibrant colours of the Parys Mountain copper mines, Amlwch, Anglesey, North Wales, UK

Discarded rock showing the vibrant colours of the copper mines. Parys Mountain consists of an outcrop of mineralised shales, principally quartz & pyrite (iron sulphide) chalcopyrite (copper & iron sulphide) chalocite (copper sulphide) & galena (lead sulphide). Deposits yielded copper, zinc, silver & lead, with sulphur, iron oxide ("yellow ochre"), green vitriol, alum, arsenic & quartz through subsidiary manufacture. It was mined from prehistory into modern times and the open cast workings created created a moonscape of huge excavations with waste tips of colourfully impregnated soils
