Ambassador Calkoen remained a bachelor; but his amorous inclinations are hinted at in this snuffbox, which remained in the possession of his family. A large turkey-cock (kalkoen in Dutch) makes advances at a reclining Venus while restrained by Amor. The theme is derived from the myth of Leda and the Swan.
