Macrophage cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a macrophage, showing many lysosomes (dark circles) containing undigested membranes. These membranes are the remnants of cellular and foreign debris that they have engulfed. The cell nucleus (large) can be seen in the centre of the cytoplasm (green). Macrophages are a type of large white blood cell that recognise foreign particles and phagocytose (engulf and digest) them. Magnification: x5700 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
