It will surprise the reader to learn thatMr. Pope and Mr. Gwathney, both of whom I remember well, were non-Cath-olics. Mr. Pope, certainly, however, and possibly Mr. Gwathney, also, wasFather Badins personal friend, and it was from him, as often as from others, heaccepted hospitality when in Louisville. In February, 1817, Bishop Flaget issued a printed circularaddressed To the Inhabitants of Louisville, in which he informsthem that he had appointed in place of Father Badin, who had resignedthe pastorship, Rev. G. I. Chabrat to take charge of the congrega-tion. He goes on to say. Knowing his good will and zeal, I hopehe will use his utmost endeavors to comply with his duty in such amanner as to deserve the approbation of the Catholics of Louisvilleand my own. Considering, says he, the pitiable and ruinousstate your church is in, I have particularly enjoined him to set forth anew subscription for the finishing it; and I flatter myself that you willredouble your exertions (to that end), and by show
