Falaise Castle is the hereditary castle of the Dukes of Normandy and was the home of William the Conqueror at the time of the Battle of Hastings (1066), He was the illegitimate son of Robert, Duke of Normandy and the daughter of the local tanner, Herleva/Arlette and succeeded to the title upon the death of his father in 1035 in a Crusade.
