Birmingham University clock Tower, called "Old Joe", 100 metre high the tallest free standing clock tower in the world.


This is 'Old Joe', the clock tower of Birmingham University. It's the tallest free-standing clock tower in the world at 100 metres (328 feet) and is some 4 metres taller than the Big Ben tower. The clock bells weigh 20 tons and the internal floors are served by an elevator. The clock face is () across and the minute hand is () long. The pendulum is (15ft) Long. The tower was built in 1908 and was inspired by the 'Torre del Mangia' in Sienna. When first constructed it was Birmingham's tallest building but is now the third tallest after the BT Tower and The Radisson Hotel (Beetham tower).
