Also, shouldany substance, such as paper or a match, get lodged betweenthe plug and its socket, and so allow the water forming the sealgradually to pass away, the soil-pipe would then be in directcommunication with the house. Another objection to the plugcloset is, that owing to splashing, the plug chamber above theplug becomes foul, and an offensive smell may pass into theapartment through the opening for the plug handle.
