The castle was built during the times of the Muslim dominance of Andalusia region in the 11th and 12th centuries. Later improved during the Reconquest by Ferdinand III and through into the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Alcalá used to be known as Alcalá de los Panaderos (Alcalá of the Bakers) due to the area's dominant role in providing Seville's bread.
