Meera Parekn, 14 years old finishing Rangoli Patterns at the Mela & Festival partnership north-west held at the Flag Market, Preston, UK a family festival of South Asian Culture. The event sponsored by Lancashire County Council was opened by the Lady Mayor Councillor Veronica Afrin. The multicultural event featured the usual combination of live music, dance, food and craft stalls, a funfair, activity workshops and a lively Mela Procession around the city centre. The Preston Mela is a vibrant celebration of South Asian culture which filled the Flag Market and Market Hall with the sounds of modern and traditional music. Dance and entertainment from around the world took place alongside a strong community element featuring performances from local musicians and dance groups. The Mela is also well known for its aromatic South Asian cuisine. Rangoli, also known as kolam or muggu is a folk art from India. Rangoli is a decorative design made in living rooms and courtyard floors during Hindu festivals
