Ifthis occurs, it is not an alarming symptom, and the inhalershould not be removed but kept upon the face and the ethercontinued. Soon the respiration will begin again, or it maybe hastened by gently compressing the chest or maintain the surgical anaesthesia thus produced, the drop-ping should be continued ; as the anaesthesia proceeds anddeepens, the dropping may be less frequent. The amount ofether necessary can be determined by an intelligent watchingof the operation. This is the care of the anaesthetist, notbecause of his interest in the operation in se, but in orderthat he may conduct a better anaesthesia. By thus keepingan eye on the operation and noting whether the reflexesreniain abolished and the muscles relaxed, the dropping maybe so regulated as just to maintain surgical anaesthesia, from. It is recognised that alcoholics and those addicted to theopium habit take ether badly, but even with them excellentresults have been obtained with this instrument. For adenoid, mastoid and similar operations, in which it isnecessary to keep the patients head on one side, a coverclosed on top and having the opening in the side should beemployed. Dr. Ferguson points out in the article to which reference isgiven that the less precise methods waste ether, are apt to causeirritation of the skin, and by over-wetting of the gauze to renderthe inhaler at once impervious to the patients expirationsand poorly adapted for an evaporation surface. In the plandetailed above (p. 160), some of these defects are obviated ETHER. 169 by manoeuvres similar to those Dr. Ferguson has suggested, while it obviates the need of
