Hurricane Ivan hitting the coast of Jamaica, on 11th September 2004 at 1610 GMT. Honduras and Nicaragua are bottom left. Florida is top left, with Cuba just below. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour. They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. At the time this image was taken Ivan was classified as a category 5 hurricane, the most severe rating. It caused winds of 260 kilometres per hour and waves that reached seven metres in height.
