Pollution research. Researcher measuring the growth of peat moss (Sphagnum sp. ), using the crank wire method. The moss is kept in a fumigation chamber that produces controlled exposure to the pollutant gas, ozone, and can simulate different ozone pollution climates. Peat mosses are thought to be particularly sensitive to ozone because their leaves are only one-cell layer thick and lack a protective cuticular layer. Photographed at Close House field station, Newcastle University, UK.
