Danish medieval village church Fresco The Twelfth Night scene Elmelunde Kirke Church Elmelunde Møn Denmark Virgin Mary presents the Infant Jesus to the 3 Holy Men from the East Painted by the famous Elmelund Master around year 1500 The entire chuch vaults are painted with fresco s like this one 6 7 meter crosswise by this master who s distinctive style is the sleepy eys The Elmelund Master was one of the most productive in the country and many nearby churches was done by him or his workshop His precise identity is not known The Danish church fresco s had both an artistic decorative purpose but many seems more beeing directed towards educating the peasants They did not understand the latin spoken by the priests so they could at least see the illustrated version of christianty above their heads where good heavenly rewards and bad eternal torments However some fresco artists succeded sneaking in scenes for everyday life in its more high spirit forms or even outright obscene scenes Many of these peasant educational frescos was limewashed around and after the Reformation as they where regarded as inappropriate The vaults was done with more decorative orientated fresco s or simply left white Modern times repair works on churches often disclose the limewashed hidden fresco s Great efforts has been done to restore them as they are regarded as a national heritage
