These porcelain insulators are in turn screwed into gun-metal end caps with a layerof rubber, which is imposed to give elasticity to the whole insulator and thus to pre-vent a fracture. The insulators are tested to 40,000 volts, while the maximumworking voltage is Fig. 1i6.—Great Northern Railway, Cascade Tunnel Yards. View of Switch

The insulators are tested to 40,000 volts, while the maximumworking voltage is Fig. 1i6.—Great Northern Railway, Cascade Tunnel Yards. View of Switchwork. The tunnel hne is 12 1/2 miles long. Power plants are placed at each end. Twotrolley wires, each 100,000 cm., are used for each phase to avoid the handling ofheavier wire in the tunnel. If one wire breaks or becomes defective it can be cutaway or renewed with facility. The overhead wires are arranged in zigzag fashion, toequalize the wear along the ollecting bow. 452 ELECTRIC TRACTION FOR RAILWAY TRAINS Giovi Railway three-phase contact Une is suspended from two parallel catenarycables one meter apart. Flat suspender links are used. The catenary and contactwires are supported by long cantilevers made of two 6-inch I beams extending fromheavy structural steel poles. Light gas pipe like that at the Simplon yards is notused. Hanger supports are clamped to the under flange of the cantilever I beamsand grip a high-tension, horizontal, spool insulator which is cemented on a pipe. The wire hangers are
