Anchorage, Alaska, infrared satellite image. North is at top. Water is blue, urban areas are pale blue, snow is white and vegetation is red. The city of Anchorage is at centre right between the two arms of the Cook Inlet. Anchorage has a population of around 250,000 people (2003), which is 40 percent of the total population of Alaska. To the east of Anchorage are the snow-covered Chugach Mountains, part of the Pacific Coastal range. This 186-kilometre-wide image was taken on 26 August 1980, in visible and infrared wavelengths, with the Multispectral Scanner (MSS) sensor on a NASA Landsat satellite.
