JD Sports Fashion plc, more commonly known as JD Sports or JD, is a British sports-fashion retail company based in Bury, Greater Manchester, England with shops throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It is a subsidiary of the Pentland Group. In 2016 and again in 2019, JD Sports was profiled in British media amid allegations of mistreatment of its UK warehouse staff letters JD in JD Sports stand for the initials of the founders of the company, John & David. In 1981, the company was established by John Wardle and David Makin, trading from a single shop in Bury, Greater Manchester. In 1983, the company opened a store in the Arndale Centre in Manchester. In 2020, JD Sports was anticipated to appoint administrators for its nearly bankrupt Go Outdoors brand, placing additional high street workers at risk amid the Covid-19 pandemic. On October 16, 2020 JD Sports opened a new flagship Store in Times Square New York. In December 2020, it was announced that the company had pulled out of talks aimed at rescuing department store chain Debenhams.
