The question of reclaiming these axles,therefore, came up a second time with the result thatwe decided to try the scheme of attaching a case-hardened collar on the end of the axles, as shown inFigs. 2 and 3. This collar consists of a piece of steelwhich is case-hardened to a depth of 1/16 in. in thegrooved part only.
