In a few weeks the Confederates evacu-ated the Ferry, moving to Winchester, theFederals taking possession and holding ituntil September, 1S02, when (Jeneral ThomasJ. Jackson captured it and compelled ColonelI>. S. Miles, the Federal commander, to sur-render with 11,000 men. The Union forceswere paroled, and Jackson marched imme-diately, liy way of Shepherdstown, to joinLee at Antietam. This happened on Sep-tember L5t
