There can beno doubt that the aponeurosis of the external oblique muscle, being denser and moreelastic in the lower region of the abdomen than in the upper one, and applied inthe manner of a belt, acquires a still greater degree of density and elasticity in thevicinity of the lower margin of the abdomen and around the inguinal ring than inany other place, from the additional covering and intersection of the above-mentionedtendinous band ; studying its function, one would be led to infer that by means ofit Nature had intended to fix the limits of the inguinal ring, and to oppose thefurther divergence of the tendinous pillars laterally. Indeed, no other intersection oftendinous fibers similar to this, at least so far as regards the number and size of the Plate III.,.
