He passed hisboyhood days in Sebec until he was sixteenyears of age, when his mother then wid-owed, with family moved to Charlestown,Mass. He was employed at the old OakHa 1 clothing house and navy }ard; thenlearning the trade of morocco dresser, atwhich he worked at the time Lincolnscall came for seventy-five thousand at once left his work and tried toenlist bttt found the company full and wastold to wait and see if all reported; at thelast moment he got a chance in CaptainWilliam R. Swans Company C, FifthRegiment. On April 19, 1861, he didnteven go home but marched to FanetiilHall where they camped for the night,leaving for Washington the next was in the first battle of Bull July 31, 1861.
