A capsular ligament, or synovial capsule, arises from the whole cir-cumference of the under end of the thigh-bone, some way above themargin of the articulating surfaces, and above the posterior part of thegreat notch between the condyles ; it descends to be fixed round thehead of the tibia, and into the whole margin of the articulating surfaceof the patella, in such a manner that the patella forms part of the capsuleof the joint. The capsular ligament is of itself remarkably thin but iscovered by the general aponeurosis of the limb, and by the tendons ofmuscles surrounding the joint, so as to acquire a considerable degree ofstrength. At the back part of this ligament there are some fibres, termedthe ligamentum posticum, as also the ligamentum posticum Winslowiia broad expansion, extended obliquely across the back part of thejoint, between the external condyle
