But forvarious reasons I wasobliged to modify myplans. My sledging equip-ment was made in thelightest and mostthorough manner,under my own super-vision, and entirelywithout reference tothe use of dogs. Theprincipal items weretwo nine-foot sledges,thirteen inches wide, made of hickory, steel, and hide,on a modified Hudson Bay pattern, and weighing,complete, with drag ropes and lashings, twenty-threepounds each ; small jacketed alcohol stoves, nine-foot double-ended ash alpenstocks with steel pointand chisel, rubber ice-creepers, snow-shoes, snow-skates.
