Poster advertising the display of Sara Baartman (1789-1815), a Khoikhoi woman who was taken from South Africa to Europe to be exhibited in 'freak shows' as the Hottentot Venus on account of her steatopygic (large-buttocked) body shape. Baartman was brought to Europe by a British doctor, with whom, although she was illiterate, she signed a contract to be publicly exhibited. She was first exhibited in London in 1810 and was toured around Britain and Ireland before being sold to a French exhibitor in 1814 and exhibited in and around Paris until her death.
