Experimental 120 mm Practice Discarding Sabot projectile showing blue body with hard steel "flight" rod and nylon bands.

An "experimental" 120 mm calibre "Practice Discarding Sabot" projectile consisting of three precision made segments (petals) fixed around a hard steel rod and made of 8 components,3 x Petals, 1 x rear cover, 1 x rear driving collar, 1 x rear driving band 1 x hardened steel rod and one frontal retaining band. The round has the same external shape as the"service" armour piercing round it is used in place of for training the gunners but at a slightly reduced cost. This projectile has a "Flght" rod instead of a solid Tungsten (Wolfram) on the actual armour piercing projectiles, whereas this one has a tapered cone at the rear of the rod which is designed to reduce its velocity during flight, the Blue Anodizing indicates it is a "Practice" round. And the purple painted ring and line indicates it is an "Experimental" round and in this instance it is due to to "Flight" rod being longer than the norm.
