Once, indeed, he had seena swan wheeling in the heavens above him, anda faint chord of memory twanged in his heartand was silent again. Yet he had received peace, which he would not have exchanged for thewealth of the world nor for the wisdom of Solo-mon, for it was passing knowledge. Yet, though all nature held high festival andrejoiced, little did the brethren of the HolyGrail rejoice with her. For the king Titurel, who for long years had lived but in the chapelof the Grail, wondrously kept alive by the Feastof Love which our Saviour instituted, was dead,200 <. \-<; AUGUST and even on this day was to be his burial. Andhis son, King Amfortas, was also nigh to death, for the grievousness of the wound wherewithyears agone the magician Klingsor had woundedhim. For Amfortas had yielded to sin and tosleep, and while he slept in Klingsors gardenof sorceries the magician had thrust at him withthe sacred spear, and only by the touch of thespear could his wound be healed. And as oftenas Amfortas would essay to unveil to theknights the radiance of the Holy Grail did thatwound break out afresh, and thus for long timehad they been without that strengthening andrefreshing of their souls, for the lack of whichhis father Titurel, lacking that spiritual meatand holy drink, had died. Very early on this morning came the knightGurnemanz from his hermits hut, nigh thesacred spring, to look with dim eyes onto thebeauty of the spring-time, and as he looked onthe flowering meadows he heard, so he thought.
