The Return Circuit of Two Companies Chicago, Nov. 10, 1901. Editors Street Railway Journal: In connection with the question of the drop of potential in thereturn circuit of an electric road, a peculiar case came under mynotice several years ago. Two different companies operated linesparallel with each other for several miles. One of these com-panies had a power house in the suburbs, the other had one partway down town. The relative location of the power houses with reference to thetwo lines in question was roughly, as in the accompanying making measurements along the line of the road marked Iit was found, to the surprise of those handling the instruments, that the loss in the return circuit between the point A and the. power house at the other end of the line, which supplied it, wasmuch less than at other points on the system, supplied from thesame power house, and equidistant therefrom. A little study re-vealed the fact that the two power houses belonging to differentcompanies were practically in series, as far as the supply of cur-rent to cars on adjacent portions was concerned. To make anexample easily understood, suppose, as in the accompanyingsketch, that there are only two cars on the two lines, and thatthey are in the positions indicated. The current supplying the carat A will partly find its way from the track under the car throughthe ground, and underground metallic structures to the negativebus of the power house near that point, as indicated by the dottedline and arrows, after which it will form part of that flowingthrough the generator and trolley wire to supply the car at B. AtB a similar operation takes place. The current flowing to the carat B returns pa
