Perianal abscess. Close-up of an abscess on the skin near a 5 month old boy's anus. An abscess is an inflamed pus-filled infection in a soft tissue. Due to its location it is usually very tender, and due to its location it can cause painful bowel movements. The most common cause is infection by Staphylococcus bacteria, although other micro- organisms may be responsible. Treatment is with surgical drainage of the pus and a course of antibiotics.
