Woman holding solar powered lamp, Kenya. This portable lamp is powered by rechargable batteries. The lamp was charged at an experimental solar powered 'energy hub' centre in Mbita, Kenya. Villagers with no access to electricity can charge lamps and other devices at the energy hub. This lamp is comprised of a seven-watt compact fluorescent bulb that produces approximately 400 lumens and lasts for about eight hours. It also has a lower powered LED light setting, suitable for book reading. It replaces traditional lamps that run on kerosene fuel.
