A large, brick, privately upgraded township bungalow, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa
This large, brick bungalow was the best example of a privately improved township house shown to me by my township guide in July 2008. Owners are allowed to spend money improving their homes, but they are not allowed to sell them for 15 years. The government argues anyone spending large amounts of money on improvement will not be in a hurry to move. Some township residents have a comfortable standard of living.
