Michelangelo's David. This marble statue, sculpted by the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo, is one of the world's most celebrated works of art. It depicts the Biblical David (later King of Israel) at the moment of his battle with Goliath. The statue, which is over 5 metres in height, was sculpted from 1501 to 1504. Since 1873, it has been displayed here in the Accademia Gallery, Florence, Italy. Photographed following the restoration that was caried out by the gallery in 2003 and 2004, in preparation for the statue's 500th anniversary.
