Helene Mayer, German world champion fencer, 1928. At the age of 17, Mayer (1910-1953) won a gold medal for fencing at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and a silver medal at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. She competed for Nazi Germany in Berlin, despite having been forced to leave Germany in 1935 and resettle in the United States because she was Jewish.
