Richard Simon. Portrait of Richard Simon, radio astronomer, with a catalogue of stars' radio characteristics as a background. The colours and positions relate to the stars' luminosity and proximity to Earth: close, very powerful stars are at top left. Richard Simon works at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Charlottesville, USA, and is involved in looking for planets around stars outside our Solar system. Observation of extrasolar planets is important as other systems could provide valuable information about our own, and maybe even give clues as to the origins of life in the Solar system.
